I’ve been doing oil pulling for years now, and honestly, it’s one of those simple little rituals I can’t imagine skipping anymore. It’s just part of my mornings now—before the chaos, before the kids are up, before life kicks in.

It’s not fancy. It’s not complicated. But it makes me feel fresh, clear, and like I’ve actually done something good for myself first thing in the day.

Why I Stopped Using Regular Mouthwash

I used to use store-bought mouthwash, like most people do, but once I started learning more about oral health, I realised something important—it doesn’t just kill the bad bacteria, it also wipes out the good bacteria too.

And we actually need those good bacteria in our mouth. It helps keep everything balanced—breath, gums, even overall oral health.

Over time I also started paying more attention to gum health and things like gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums. When your oral microbiome is out of balance, your gums can really show it. That’s another reason I moved towards a more natural routine that actually supports the mouth instead of stripping it.

My Morning Oil Pulling Blend

After doing lots of research, I ended up creating this blend because of its benefits:

  • Coconut oil – naturally antibacterial and soothing

  • Hemp oil – supports healthy tissues with omega fatty acids

  • Sesame oil – traditionally used in Ayurvedic oral care practices

  • Activated charcoal – helps draw out impurities and supports a cleaner mouth feel

  • Peppermint essential oil – gives that super fresh, clean feeling

  • Clove oil – naturally very antibacterial and antifungal (I only use a tiny amount because it’s strong, but it’s amazing for oral support and gum health)

I take about a tablespoon and swish it around my mouth first thing in the morning for around 10–15 minutes. I usually do it while I’m getting ready or making a coffee.

It literally feels like it pulls everything out of your mouth and leaves it feeling so clean and refreshed.

Tongue Scraping

After oil pulling, I always use a metal tongue scraper.

Your tongue holds a lot of bacteria and build-up from overnight, and once you start scraping it, you realise just how much is actually sitting there.

Metal scrapers are my favourite because they’re hygienic, easy to clean, and they actually work properly.

A few gentle scrapes from back to front and your mouth just feels instantly fresher.

My Final Step: Sea Salt Rinse

After brushing my teeth, I always do a warm water and sea salt rinse.

Sea salt naturally contains minerals that can support oral health and help maintain strong, healthy teeth. These minerals may help support the natural remineralisation process in the mouth, which is important for keeping teeth strong and resilient over time.

I notice:

  • Fresher breath

  • A really clean, reset feeling

  • Gums feel calmer and healthier

  • A natural mineral boost

It’s such a simple step but it makes a big difference.

Why I Do This Every Morning

I always do this first thing in the morning. It’s my little reset ritual.

For me it’s about:

  • Detoxing my mouth after sleep

  • Supporting oral hygiene naturally

  • Gently activating the facial lymphatic system through swishing and scraping

  • Supporting gum health, especially around issues like gingivitis and inflammation

  • Starting my day feeling fresh and clear

It’s one of those habits that just makes me feel better overall.
